At Vocal Justice, we wanted to make sure our leadership structures embodied our belief that youth proximate to injustice have valuable insights into what is needed to build a more just world. I co-designed our Youth Advisory Council (YAC) with youth leaders and equipped both youth leaders and Board members to collaborate on the organization’s strategy. 100% of YAC members reported that they would recommend working with Vocal Justice to a peer because they felt listened to and respected.
At Kaleidoscope, a child welfare agency, we knew that caregivers were stretched thin, and that youth in care experienced gaps in support. I developed and created year-round arts programs during school breaks that built on a trauma-informed framework. I collaborated with case management teams and local artists to bring to life a program that changed youth’s relationship to their care teams and introduced them to new possibilities for their futures.
An emergent immigration legal aid clinic was overwhelmed by client needs amidst increased federal immigration enforcement. I coordinated an all-volunteer leadership team to build a full-service legal clinic that, within a year, engaged over 150 volunteers and served 2,000 asylum seekers. In year one, we raised over $300,000 in responsive funding to allow the clinic to hire a social worker and paralegal, and provide emergency aid to clients.
