About Bess

I have over a decade of experience stewarding nonprofit organizations and serving as a strategic partner to justice-minded leaders. I balance efficiency and rigor with compassionate support, and I prioritize shared power among all collaborators.
In 2014, I co-founded StoryArts, a free summer camp for South Side middle schoolers that became an endowed program at the University of Chicago. While building arts programming at child welfare agency Kaleidoscope, I received my MSW from the University of Chicago. I then partnered with the founder of Vocal Justice to build the nonprofit's operations, team culture, and strategy.
I’ve worked with a diverse and talented group of leaders across journalism, legal aid, and social services to hone, fund, and execute big ideas. I’m comfortable building from the ground up and implementing new systems and projects in organizations that are already in motion. I am particularly skilled at bringing clarity and efficiency to young organizations and those in transition.
Outside of work, I love live jazz, lifting, and executing complex projects — such as erupting volcano cakes, temporary tattoo sleeves, and structurally-sound pillow forts — for a pair of visionary executives who are also my godchildren.
